Head or Heart?

In a world where we are often expected to choose between the wants, needs and requests of our head and heart, more often than not it is our head that wins the debate. Is this because our head knows best? Do we choose to follow our head because this is of course the place where our physical brain is indeed situated, which means our head must know more about us than our heart?

On the other hand, our heart is the vessel which is keeping our physical body alive. Without the tireless work of our heart - feeding our veins with life, and enabling our brain to function healthily - there would simply be no us, and indeed no debate to be had.

Choosing to follow our head first and foremost is sensible. This is a decision which allows for practicality, maturity and common sense. This decision will enable us to activate the necessary structure which keeps us safe and secure. We opt for the safety of our physical brain because obtaining and storing knowledge is its job.

Our physical brain will do whatever is necessary to ensure we are protected, from all incoming threats which may possibly throw us off guard, and cause us harm of a mental, emotional or physical nature. Our protective physical brain is a vital portal of knowledge and security for our human existence, which is why we are conditioned to seek its wisdom and guidance. However, when we choose to follow the thoughts of our head alone, and bypass the feelings of our heart, we are missing out on the part of ourselves which is also vital to a healthy life.

Our heart brings us the gift of not only life, but this is the source of the most amazing experiences us humans will ever have. We can try to ignore the instinctive feelings of our heart. We can feel the warmth, the pleasure, the excitement, the joy and love which only our heart can bring, and we can also do our best to pretend we do not.

What comes from our heart are the authentic signals and signs that help us to navigate our way through a world that is often confusing, de-stabelising and pressurised. When we choose to listen to our heart we are greeted with only two options. Does it make us feel good? Or feel bad? Which means we can choose to make our decision based on these two basic feelings.

When we choose to follow only our heart, or only our head, we are often left feeling exposed. There is an element of doubt left behind after we make our decision, because we can find ourselves forever wondering ‘What if?’ What if we had chosen to put our heart first and embraced the emotions which we silently suppress in favour for our ‘sensible’ head felt decision? What if we had chosen to put our head first, and decided our protection from eternal forces was much more favourable, than the risk of leaving ourselves open and feeling vulnerable?

Imagine if we had the capability to lead from our heart, while engaging our head also? As multifaceted and gifted human beings are fully capable of believing we can do both?

We can choose to listen to our heart and our head in unison. We can allow ourselves to feel, embrace and live through every emotion. These are the emotions which our heart wants and needs us to both give to others, and embrace for ourselves. We can choose the healthy option to take action from a place of both our heart and head, where we can live our life in a balanced way without feeling exposed.

Obtaining a balanced mindset means we are able to make harmonious, authentic, and heartfelt responses, while also deploying our natural back up protective system of our physical brain and head. In this state of equilibrium we are giving ourselves the opportunity to discover peace of mind, clarity, balance, self-trust and freedom.

Our decision to merge both our heart and head together equally, means we completely understand how vulnerability will be able to exist side by side with inner understanding. We will understand how whatever the outcome of our choice, we will not come to any harm. We will understand that as long as we continue to make every decision in our life from our heart, we are ultimately protected by our partnership with our head. This will be activated when we trust in the protective headspace and back up source of knowledge of self.
