Depression

Once we have suffered the destruction of depression, it becomes undeniably visible in others. Depression can be completely silent when undetected, but when we are aware of the condition in either ourselves or others it can become extremely deafening both internally and externally, like a silent scream.

Nobody is born depressed or naturally evolves into a depressed individual, as depression does not originate within us or from us.  Depression is a result of us trying to exist outside of our naturally physical, mental and spiritually healthy self. We are not living our life from the position we are created to from the inside out, instead we are trying to live from the outside in.  This is a misguided and dispirited state, which ultimately results in ill health both physically and mentally, with deep seated negative and ugly feelings such as worthlessness and hopelessness.

We are all sadly aware that depression is a form of mental illness, and that our threshold for mental pain - while it is extensive -  is not limitless. There is only so much disorder one mind can endure before long term and irreversible damage can be done.  Mental trauma and pain can be so strong and so devastating that our brain automatically decides to ignore the signs. Our brain believes that it is simply too much for us to face, and in a nurturing attempt at self preservation, our mind would rather pretend the event did not occur and block it out from both our short and long term memory and psyche, rather than face it.

The problem with this method of help is that while our brain has our best interest at heart, and truly believes it is doing its best at protecting us, what it is actually doing is the opposite by causing us more long term damage later on.  This process is the complete opposite of the action of our soul. While our mind believes it is safer to retreat from the trauma and even attempt to bury it, our soul knows that the best way to deal with any trauma or unease is to face it, and confront it, so that we may remove it from our psyche completely.

Our failure to manage our own thoughts and behaviours is generally the reason why so many of us seek therapy and help from a specialist, to assist us in our acceptance and release from our states of anxiety and mental health disorders, where our past traumatic experiences - which we have often tried to pretend did not even exist - are often revisited when they surprisingly resurface. We have unconsciously gone through the majority of our lives traumatised with so many hidden issues and problems which we either forgot as they were buried so deep within our heart and mind, or we did not even know our mind had hidden.  It is for this reason we must take full control of our mind. We must be extremely careful what we allow in, and what we do with that information. If we are to live a life which is true, fearless and healthy we must not allow our mind to trick us into any form of pretence which can often participate in our downfall.

This harrowing condition of depression is often viewed as a crisis of the mind, and as the word ‘crisis’ can describe a situation on a larger scale which is out of our control, such as global famine or even a financial recession, we are not individually responsible for this type of crisis, but we can however choose how we respond to it. Depression can also be viewed as a failure of self control or mismanagement of our mind, which basically means that something has gone wrong, and our old ways of operating our thoughts are no longer working. And just like a global crisis, we can choose how we respond to it also, because this is ultimately within our control.

Depression is an internal dis-ease, and an internal warning created to remind us that we are not at ease with ourselves.  Depression serves to remind us that we are perfectly imperfect human beings, not machines. We do not know how to do everything, be everything or solve everything.  Until we choose to make the hard yet vital decision to examine our internal darkness, our damage will not subside, and if we continue to ignore our negative and self-destructive feelings we will be continuously enabling the early onset of physical or mental illness, sometimes both.

Depression does not just happen to us, it happens for us. For us to wake up, pay attention and take full responsibility and appropriate action in our lives. While depression is ultimately a position of self abandonment, so too is depression our invitation to self-acquisition as depression is the portal to seek out and ignite our inner sparks of self care and self love.
